Bio
Anatoly Suzdaltsev is a visual artist and photographer. Born in 1980 in the Southern Urals, he is based in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and studies at Fotografika Academy.
His practice focuses on urban photography, vernacular archives, and the nonhuman. Anatoly explores spaces through both analogue photography and photogrammetry, artificial intelligence, 3D reconstruction, and other methods of computational photography. He is interested in the boundaries between memory and constructed reality, the human and the machine.
Anatoly creates visual narratives charged with tension, uncertainty, and enigma. He primarily works through the photobook format, creating works with multiple layers of meaning that invite readers to uncover hidden connections and interpretations.
His projects have been shown in exhibitions and festivals across Europe and Asia, including the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, Slovakia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and others. His zines and books are held in the collections of Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Zone of the Zine, NIZINA, and the Carlos Fontes Library.
Artist Statement
Photography is my way of researching and questioning what we accept as reality. Memory changes over time, fakes fill our environment, archives decay, people fill gaps with imagination. My work grows from these imperfections.
I like to begin with weird stories, lost places or found photographs or artifacts. Rather than treating them as historical evidence, I see them as starting points for new narratives. I combine photography with computational techniques such as photogrammetry, Gaussian splats, scanography and 3D reconstruction to create ambiguous narratives and blur the boundary between reality and possible worlds.
The photobook is my primary medium because it allows me to develop narratives over many pages: a photobook gives space for doubt, contradictions and multiple readings. I also follow Plato’s concept of the ‘poet as a medium’, and I believe that the Universe communicates with Humanity through artists.
